NEW ORLEANS -- The 2017 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference postseason awards were announced Thursday night at the conference's annual pre-tournament awards banquet.
Talladega guard/forward Tajanee Wells and her coach, Kevin Herod took home the evening's top honors as they were named Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
Wells (pictured at right) became the second consecutive Talladega Lady Tornado to be named Player of the Year, following guard Shakeena Benton last season. Wells is averaging 18.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals this season and ranks in the top five in the GCAC in scoring average, field goal percentage and rebound average. She's also been named First Team All-GCAC in each of the past three seasons.
Herod, in his third year as head coach, has earned Coach of the Year honors in consecutive seasons. He led Talladega to an 11-1 conference mark this season as the Lady Tornadoes claimed their second regular season championship in a row.
Talladega has an overall mark of 20-8 heading into the GCAC tournament and is currently ranked 25th in the NAIA Division I Coaches' Poll.
